Internet providers in Michigan

Whether you’re in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or situated south in its mitten, you’ll probably need high-speed internet. And for those Michiganites shopping around for fast internet providers in Michigan, we have you covered.

Xfinity is only available in parts of the southern half of the state, but they operate using fiber cable and can, therefore, offer blazing fast speeds. In a similar vein is Lightspeed Communications — now called MetroNet — in downtown Grand Rapids, Lansing, and near Ann Arbor. This company also uses a fiber network, so they can also deliver excellent connection speeds.

For customers outside these areas, check out AT&T. This DSL and fiber service is available in large swaths of the state, including the Upper Peninsula (UP). Cable internet from Charter Communications/ Spectrum is also available throughout much of the state and the UP. Additionally, satellite internet from Viasat is available anywhere in the Great Lake State.

AT&T operates in various regions all over Michigan, including in the northern part of the state. The cost of its plans ranges from $50 to $90 per month for one year. They offer both DSL and fiber and claim to have a 99 percent reliability rate, even during peak times. Customers will also receive WiFi equipment without any extra costs.

MetroNet operates using a 100 percent fiber network, but they only cover tiny patches on the state. Specifically, their internet is available in downtown Ypsilanti (near Ann Arbor), Lansing, Grand Rapids, and just outside of Detroit. However, if you are one of the lucky ones with access, you could get extremely fast one gig rates. Its internet service costs between $49.99 and $89.95 per month.

Charter Communications is also known as Spectrum, and they have fast speeds. Prices start at $49.99 per month for the first year. Furthermore, the company has many free WiFi hotspots in communities throughout the state of Michigan. Hotspots help you conserve your personal data usage when you are out on the town. Spectrum may also help you with up to $500 for transitioning to their plan from another provider’s contract.

Viasat satellite internet is another trustworthy provider in Michigan. Satellite is an excellent option for remote homes with no other high-speed choice. Plans start at $50 per month and can go up to $150 per month. Keep in mind, however, that satellite internet is often slower than fiber.

Xfinity is available in over 280 communities around Michigan. The company offers some of the highest possible speeds in Michigan because it’s a fiber network. Plans through the Comcast-led Xfinity typically cost between $40 and $55 per month, depending on your location. Some regions have more or less expensive plans available.

Additionally, Xfinity provides free WiFi hotspots in many communities around Michigan. This service allows you to access the internet on-the-go without using all your data.
