Internet providers in Idaho

Idaho is a large and sprawling state, with dozens of internet providers serving various local areas. Internet providers in Idaho offer cable, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), satellite and fixed wireless services. On average, statewide internet speeds are among the lowest in the nation. Still, download speeds as high as 100 Mbps or more are available through many cable providers in some parts of Idaho.

The availability of cable and DSL internet plans depends on where you live in Idaho. High-speed cable providers operating in the state include Sparklight (formerly CableOne), Spectrum (formerly Charter Spectrum), Frontier Internet Services and Xfinity. CenturyLink is a major provider of DSL services in Idaho, offering speeds of up to 20 Mbps, although DSL is also provided by many other ISPs, often at speeds below 10 Mbps. Until recently, the existence of super-fast fiber-optic internet plans in Idaho has been close to nil. However, CenturyLink recently began to lay down fiber in portions of Boise and to start offering 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service.

When fast internet speeds aren’t available by landline, many Idahoans are turning to fixed wireless broadband services. Fixed wireless plans from companies like Rise Broadband provide download speeds up to 20 Mbps or 25 Mbps.

The three largest providers of internet in Idaho are Sparklight, CenturyLink and Rise Broadband.

Sparklight (formerly CableOne)

Aside from fiber, cable technology offers the fastest Internet speeds. Cable providers in Idaho tend to provide internet connectivity at a variety of price points. Sparklight, for example, offers an entry-level service called Lite 15 plus, with maximum download speeds of 15 Mbps, starting at $30 per month. A more costly service called Starter 100 Plus, available for $55 monthly, supplies download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. In some areas, the company now offers a Streaming & Gamer 200 Plus Service, with download speeds of up to 200 Mbps, starting at $65 per month.

CenturyLink is starting to carve out a niche that runs both below and above the cable providers when it comes to pricing and performance. The company has long specialized in offering DSL services throughout large portions of the state at faster speeds than those of smaller DSL providers. CenturyLink offers speeds of up to 10 Mbps for a starting price of $45 per month and speeds of up to 20 Mbps starting at $49 per month.

The company maintains that its advertised pricing is more reliable than that of cable providers because DSL subscribers don’t need to share the available bandwidth with their neighbors. Now CenturyLink is beginning to compete against cable services on the high end, too, with a 1 Gbps FTTH plan starting at $65 per month.

Rise Broadband

With download speeds of up to 25 Mbps, Rise Broadband isn’t in the gigabit league. However, Gig internet is just getting off the ground in Idaho, and 25 Mbps is widely regarded as sufficient to support streaming media over the web. Rise Broadband is also available just about everywhere in the state. You’re likely to get higher internet speeds from Rise than from DSL internet providers in Idaho, although probably at a higher price. Rise Broadband plan prices start at $29.95 per month.
